BAPTISM at St Mary’s

Baptism is a joyful and sacred moment – the beginning of a lifelong journey with God, and a welcome into the family of the Church. Whether for a child, a young person, or an adult, baptism marks our belonging in Christ and our place within the Christian community.

At St Mary’s, we love to celebrate baptisms. Each one is unique, personal, and rooted in prayer. It’s a chance to say yes to God’s love, to commit to growing in faith, and to ask for the support of the Church as we walk that path together.

CHRISTENINGS for Children and Infants
Baptism is often called a christening when it happens in early childhood. It’s a moment of deep thanksgiving – a commitment by parents and godparents to help a child grow in the love of God. The church community promises to support them, too.

These services usually take place on Sundays, either within our main Eucharist or as a separate service with family and friends. We’ll meet with you to talk through the meaning of baptism, answer any questions, and help you feel at home in the church.

Adult Baptism
Some people come to baptism later in life, having discovered faith as adults or feeling drawn back to church after time away. These are powerful and moving occasions – often combined with confirmation – where you affirm your faith and receive the sign of God’s grace in water and prayer. If you're considering adult baptism, we’d love to walk with you as you explore and prepare.

Who Can Be Baptised at St Mary’s?
Baptism normally takes place in your own parish church – the place where you live or regularly worship. But if you have a family connection to St Mary’s or a strong link to this place, it may be possible to hold a baptism here. We’re always happy to talk it through with you, and we’ll work with your own parish priest if needed.
