Music at St Mary’s
Music has always been at the heart of worship at St Mary’s. Under the direction of our gifted Director of Music, the choir leads us in lifting our praises to God with beauty and depth. Their singing enriches the weekly Sung Eucharist, drawing the congregation into the mystery of the liturgy, and gives voice to the timeless prayers of Choral Evensong, which holds a cherished place in our Sunday pattern of worship.
As St Augustine reminds us, “The one who sings prays twice.” At St Mary’s, we believe that music opens the heart more deeply to God, uniting prayer and song in a way that words alone cannot.
Alongside the life of the choir, St Mary’s is glad to welcome other musicians and ensembles who find in our church an inspiring setting for concerts and recitals. The combination of historic architecture and resonant acoustics makes the building a place where music can be both offered and received as a gift. Our annual Good Friday concert is remarkably well supported and we are pleased to also host the Noteworthy Voices. If you would like to hire for a musical event, please do make contact.
Through the ministry of music - whether in the worship of the church or the life of the wider community - St Mary’s seeks to provide a space where people may encounter beauty, be uplifted in spirit, and be drawn closer to the presence of God.
